“True Love” is an exhibition of paintings by Abe Odedina downstairs at the Department Store and is part of the Brixton Design Trail.

One of the paintings by Abe Odedina that will be on display in the Department Store

“True Love” visualises monologues written by vulnerable young people reflecting upon experiences they will never forget – from the best to the worst. Sadly the stories are mostly about tragedy and loss –  the joy and pain of love, youthful crime and punishment, the brutal loss of innocence, troubled friendships and stolen treasure. Collectively they are a sombre comment on, and timely reminder of, the perils of childhood in many parts of the world. Yet they are also bursting with life and energy. Each deeply touching narrative is captured and unfolds in Odadina’s bold, sure-footed and accessible canvasses – often triptychs and tetraptychs.

Abe Odedina manages to crystallise the intensely personal and to illuminate universal experiences by anchoring these individual stories to everyday situations and objects. Exuberant colours, touches of magic realism and a sprinkling of visual mysteries and puzzles all make for an engaging and touching series of paintings. Spend time with each one. They deserve it and the reward lies in trying to unravel the plot, decipher the clues and follow the journey. And remember these are about real lives – real pleasures, all too fleeting, and real pain, all too present.

The paintings were commissioned in 2016 by Danny Boyle and the South African charity Dramatic Need. They are shown together here in Brixton for the first time.
