Brixton City Festival seeks artists for paid commissions

Brixton City Festival 2016 Mass hula hoop Windrush SquareOvalhouse theatre’s Brixton City Festival returns in September, planning to fill our streets with radical entertainment.

Small scale commissions for site-specific work and outdoor performances that respond to Brixton in some way – the place, its communities or its future are on offer. £1,000 to £2,000 could be awarded to theatre makers; installation artists; aerial artists; circus acts; musicians; dancers; spoken word artists; and others.

Ovalhouse is seeking plans for something new, or to present an untested piece of work that is performance ready.

It is also interested in existing work that could be reimagined in a Brixton venue. Suggested venues include pop-up restaurants, Brixton Village, St Matthews Peace Garden, the Tube station, Windrush Square; market stalls; and shop doorways.

The first festival last year saw 23 artists perform in six Brixton locations, including a mass hula hoop performance (above) in Windrush Square.

Submissions and enquiries to BrixtonCity@ovalhouse.com. Deadline midnight Monday 27 March.
