Organisers of Brixton Wave – the event that was planned for the coming weekend to replace the Brixton Splash – announced today (9 August) that it has been postponed.
In a statement they said: “After careful consideration and despite the willingness of many involved, a decision has been made to postpone this year’s Brixton Wave event.
“Issues including community safety and sanitation, among others, were not able to be fully resolved in time for the event. However, we are optimistic that Brixton Wave will be a positive and safe event in the summer of 2018.”
The last Splash took place in 2015. Complaints from residents of central Brixton, concerns about public safety and the cost of the clean-up meant that it was not allowed to continue in 2016.
Lambeth council said that Splash had become “a victim of its own success” and that businesses and residents felt that the event “was too big, too uncontrolled and the cost of policing and cleaning up were too expensive”.
The new Brixton Wave was launched in February this year and backed by, among others, the Black Cultural Archives, Brixton Business Improvement District, Lambeth council, the Metropolitan police, Network Rail and Transport for London.
Plans had been announced for a food festival on Friday and a “retail and a shopping day” on Saturday.
It was due to be have its own smartphone app with special offers, discount and listings.
Postponed until when? Next week? Or 2018? If next year, given that it was supposed to be replacing an annual event, perhaps the word “cancelled” would be more accurate?
