Brixton windmill takes pride of place on Lambeth map

Brixton Windmill, or Ashby Mill, is not just famous for it presence on the Brixton Blog logo. Now it has taken pride of place on an illustrated map of Lambeth by 26-year-old south London artist Mike Hall.

His borough map, showing Brixton’s landmark and its position within Lambeth, is part of a series from around London.

Hall says the map took him nearly two weeks to create and he enjoyed bringing it alive with historic aspects of Lambeth. He told the Blog today: “Brixton Windmill was a little nugget I have known about for a while now, and I try and make references to local history so it was an obvious choice.”

The illustrator can often be found with a stall at Brixton’s regular Craft Fox market. His map prints are inspired by 19th century maps, and each element is hand drawn before being digitally coloured. You can see all the maps he has completed so far on Hall’s website.
