BRIXTON Soup Kitchen and non-profit organisation Giveacar are teaming up to help raise funds and to continue to support people in need.

The two organisations handed out free teas and coffees to passers-by outside Asda in Clapham Junction on Sunday morning to raise awareness of both projects and to thank the community for their support.

Giveacar, founded in 2010, is a social enterprise which accepts donations of unwanted cars to raise funds for charity.

It donates all proceeds from the sale or scrapping of a car to a UK registered charity of the donor’s choice.

The organisation has raised £1.9m through the sale of cars ranging from old bangers to luxury brands.

Giveacar manager Patrick Church said: “We’ve even had a few Rolls-Royces and Porsches donated.”

For Giveacar’s latest project it aims not to sell, but to raise the money so that Brixton Soup Kitchen can buy a £15,000 van for outreach work.

Co-founder Mahamed Hashi explained that the van will enable the charity to provide homeless people across London and beyond with hot food.

He added: “It’s not really safe to go to to the places we go on your own. The van will mean we can all travel together.”

Mahamed’s co-founder Solomon Smith said helping Brixton’s homeless, which he does alongside his job as a youth worker, is a rewarding experience.

“Homeless people are some of the most giving people you’ll meet.”

After a successful awareness event, the Giveacar team hope to help out on one of the Soup Kitchen’s maiden outings in their new van.
