Fridge Bar to be subject to compulsory purchase by Lambeth Council

*Update: This article originally stated that Electric Brixton could be under threat due to a Compulsory Purchase Order from Lambeth Council.

Both Lambeth Council and Electric Brixton have been in touch to let us know that the CPO relates only to Fridge Bar – not to the entire building.*

We’re happy to say that a century of cultural history hasn’t just been wiped out and that Electric Brixton is operating business as usual!

A Compulsory Purchase Order from Lambeth Council will see the end of Fridge Bar next door to Electric Brixton (previously ‘Fridge’).

As part of the ‘Your New Town Hall’ initiative, Lambeth Council will vote in a meeting on 8 December to ‘approve the promotion of a Compulsory Purchase Order of 1 Town Hall Parade in order to secure the necessary land and interests needed to deliver the YNTH project.’

Is the devil in the detail? A Compulsory Purchase Order could see Electric Brixton closed.
The YNTH project will purchase the land on which Fridge Bar currently resides

We’re glad that this ISN’T the end of an era for Electric Brixton we thought it might be!

Electric Brixton – which celebrated its 100th birthday this year – has played host to some huge acts in its time, from The Clash to The Smiths. Its 100 years have seen it transition from a silent movie picture-house called the Palladium, to an historic music venue called variously The Ace, The Fridge and finally Electric Brixton.

It’s here to stay: and that is awesome news. Sorry for the scare. It’s almost Halloween after all.

The venue has stood in Brixton for 100 years: it was once The Palladium Picturehouse
