Crowds at Start-up BrixtonBy Celia Buzuk

Hundreds of budding entrepreneurs and business-minded Brixtonians turned up to South London’s biggest ever start-up event yesterday at Pop Brixton.

The free event, Start-up Brixton, gave business hopefuls a chance to network,  hear a range of speakers, take part in workshops and even pitch for a possible £10,000 investment.

Start-up-BrixtonDirkBischoffOrganiser Dirk Bischof, from Hatch, said: “What we are trying to do here today is bring the local community together around something we care deeply about, which is entrepreneurship.”

Hatch runs workshops out of their Brixton offices to support locals who are thinking of starting a business or running a social enterprise.

Over 100 entrepreneurs have gone through their program in the last two years.

“Lots of entrepreneurs have turned up, lots of people from the community, we have local companies that have donated to our prizes, local partners who are exhibiting.

We hope to inspire, engage and motivate the next generation of entrepreneurs to make it happen.”

“We want to bring our alumni, who have already started up their own business’ together with those who are thinking of starting a business.”

Start-up-Brixton-FionaSmallFiona Small, founder and director of Young Mums Support Network, an organisation that provides support, training and development to mums in Brixton, said:

“Today is so important for Brixton entrepreneurs. When people get together there is a great atmosphere and a great buzz so it’s brilliant! We want to see more of this.”
