A woman and her two children were rescued by neighbours this morning as a blaze swept through their Brixton home.
People nearby were alerted by their screams at about 7.50am today, before a group of men kicked down a front door to get up to the first floor flat and lead the three to safety. They were then treated by paramedics at the scene.
More than 20 firefighters then helped to put out a blaze in a converted first floor flat in Loughborough Road this morning.
One witness, who asked not to be named, told Brixton Blog: “I was on my way to work and I heard a scream. I looked up and saw a young girl screaming out of the window, there was smoke pouring out of the window next to her.
“Then three or four men went over to kick the door down and get them out.”
The eyewitness said she was “in shock” after the incident. She said: “There were smoke and flames coming out of the window and over the roof. I called the fire brigade and when I got to work I was in tears. It was awful to see.”
Four fire engines from Brixton, Lambeth and Peckham fire stations went to the blaze which destroyed much of the five-room flat in the semi-detached house.
The fire, which began about 7.50am, was brought under control by 9am and the fire brigade is investigating the cause.
