The Kitchen Counter, 288-290 Milkwood Rd, London, SE24 0EZ

Deliciously Herne Hill
Food writer Ella Mills has opened her third Deliciously Ella site, The Kitchen Counter (above), in Herne Hill on Milkwood Road. The Kitchen Counter offers a selection of “healthy and simple” breakfast options, from porridge bowls and freshly made smoothies, to sweetcorn fritters with baked beans & smashed avocado. For lunch and dinner, a selection of plant-based salads is on offer, as well as soups and a range of sweets. It will also be an extension of Deliciously Ella’s development kitchen. Open from 7:30am to 8pm on Monday to Friday, and 9am to 7pm at the weekends.

Syrian Supper
Marhabtayn Syrian Supper Club and the Baytree Family invite people to a night of delicious Syrian food, music and culture on 19 May 2017. The night will be a celebration of Syrian hospitality and an opportunity to learn more about initiatives in the UK supporting and welcoming Syrian refugees. This is a ‘pay as you feel’ event – there is no set charge, and people can give as much or as little as you can afford. All the money raised will go to supporting Syrians in Syria and as refugees. Venue: Brixton Baptist Church, Corrance Road entrance. Time: 7pm on Friday 19 May.

A taste of Greece in Brixton
A souvlaki bar has opened on Acre Lane. Mikos, run by Hugo Ushida, offers typical Greek holiday food. Freshly chargrilled meats, handcut chips, home made sauces and salads. Ushida says the focus is to do a few simple things well and it was time for Brixton to have a souvlaki bar.

Brixton at Camp Bestival
If you’re heading to Camp Bestival you can still get a taste of Brixton. Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen’s West African food will be on offer at the festival from July 27 to 30 at Lulworth Castle, Dorset. Laura Rowe, olive magazine editor the media partners of the event, said of this year’s food offering said: “The Feast Collective has a cracking line up of street food stars from across the UK – displaying the incredible diversity and the wealth of brilliant ingredients we have right here on our doorstep. I’m particularly excited about trying Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen. We featured Zoe’s brilliant recipes in our May issue and are now addicted to the vibrant, fiery flavours of Ghanaian food.”

Commercial success
Local Herne Hill favourite The Commercial reopened following a complete refurbishment, boasting a new menu, great drinks and a secret sun garden.

The Beach is back
The people who brought the Brixton Beach Boulevard are back this summer with Brixton Beach in “all it’s Cuban glory”. With food, drink and plenty of entertainment. Stay tuned for more info.
