Get up Brixton and SING!

The days are getting shorter, and winter gloom is just around the corner. But you can ward of the blues by getting into some joyful big choir singing. The stress reducing/serotonin boosting benefits of community singing are now well known and all that clapping and companionship is going to keep your hands warm and spirits high throughout the bleak midwinter.

You can give it a try at the Prince of Wales tonight 13 September for the 4th birthday of POW’s monthly Gospeloke (‘oke’ as in ‘karaoke backed by a live gospel choir). Gospeloake at the POW is every month so if you miss September check out future dates here. Standing tickets £17 or a VIP table for 8 for £200. Not cheap by pub karaoke standards but they promise you ‘a spiritual awakening with a pop concert feel’.

On offer is ‘one euphoric ceremonial singalong with soulful Toni Robinson and her 15 strong gospel choir backing you up all the way’. And then ‘ludicrously entertaining’ host Eleanor Conway organises team harmonies, and awards prizes for ‘Best Solo Performance’, ‘Best Duet/Group Performance’, the Best Confessional Tale (watch the alcohol intake on that one) and ‘much much more.’

For the slightly more reticent and financially challenged go to the Brixton Pound Cafe at 7pm on Monday 24th September for a free taster session with the new BRIXTON CAN Sing Community Choir, after which they will singing there every Monday. Get ready to sing gospel, pop and RnB.
There are no auditions and everyone of all ages, backgrounds and abilities is welcome to just come and sing.

WE CAN Sing UK is the brainchild of singer T Jae Cole, who for 15 years was the choir director of The London Community Gospel Choir as well as a successful singer in his own right. The organisation runs workshops in schools, colleges, universities, churches, clubs and all types of residential homes, and also offer corporate team building with particular emphasis on encouragement, respect and support.

Brixton’s own WE CAN Sing Community Choir will be led, and coached by choir director, session singer and vocal coach, Rubee Rose. Remember ALL are welcome. Rubee just wants you to join in the fun each Monday. The first session is free and then there is a £5 charge per session after that

Brixton Pound Cafe is at 77 Atlantic Rd, Brixton, London, SW9 8PU and We Can Sing Community Choir details are here.
