Go ahead for student flats plan at former BP garage in Herne Hill

The derelict site of the former BP garage will be transformed into students flats, offices and shops

Lambeth planning councillors last night approved plans for a 69-bedroom development of student flats, offices and shops on a derelict site between Herne Hill Road and Milkwood Road, Herne Hill.

The proposal from developers Goldcrest Ltd, will see a public walkway created between the two roads on the site of the former BP petrol station, by the entrance to Herne Hill station. It will vary in height from five-storeys on the east side to three on the west.

Lambeth planning officers recommended that a committee meeting at the Town Hall, Brixton, last night, approve the plans, which were supported by the Herne Hill Society. The council received three objections and five letters of support.

When contacted by the Brixton Blog today Goldcrest architect Graig Rodgers said he was too busy to talk about the project, but a sign on fencing at the site said: “We regularly meet with local residents and use groups active in the vicinity of our developments to better understand their vision for their neighbourhood and explore how we can work with the community to ensure our proposals will enhance your environment.”

In 2009 an application of shops and 32 flats on the site, deemed “overbearing” by planners, was turned down.
