Lambeth’s pupils recorded an outstanding performance in their GCSEs, with almost six out of 10 candidates achieving at least five higher-grades passes.

Results showed that the proportion of students earning five or more A* – C grades, including English and Maths, rose to 58 per cent, up 1 per cent from last year.

Individual schools managed to improve their performance by up to 19 per cent, compared to 2014.

At Evelyn Grace Academy in Brixton, there was an increase in the number of students getting the EBacc – a basket of rigorous academic subjects.

Twin sisters Amarachi and Onyinyechi Orie proved to be an academic double act by scooping sixteen A* and A grades at GCSE between them.

Both sisters have been students at Evelyn Grace since 2010 and say there was a bit of competition between them “but it was more about helping and supporting each other”

Amarachi (pictured in red) got 2 A*s, 6 As and a B in her GCSEs while her sister Onyinyechi got 1 A*, 7 As and a B.

Cllr Paul McGlone, deputy council leader, said: “I’d like to congratulate to all our pupils on their achievements today.

“These results are the culmination of years of hard work and commitment from pupils, their families and schools. But they are also a critical step on each young person’s journey towards their future careers, whether they plan to go to college or start work now.

“I wish all our pupils every success – and I want them to know that we’ll do everything we can to help them fulfil their potential.”
