Brixton McDonald’s holds training day for unemployed youngsters

A Brixton fast food franchise has teamed up with the local job centre to help teach unemployed youngsters the skills they need to find work.

Franchisee of McDonald’s, in Brixton Road,  Terry Eagle, set up the scheme in order to assist 18-25 year-olds who have been unemployed for a more than three months. It aims to help by building their skills, confidence, and understanding of the workplace to get them into their first careers.

He added: “We hope that, together with Jobcentre Plus and Learndirect, we will be able to help young people in South London to get the skills and help needed to get their foot on the career ladder.”

McDonald’s claims to be one of the UK’s largest apprenticeship providers, and was awarded a Grade 2 Ofsted rating, with several areas Graded 1 for its Apprenticeship Programme, just 18 months after it was launched.

Karel Splatt, 18, who works in McDonalds, said: “Having been through the job seeking process first-hand, I know how tough it can be for young people to get onto the career ladder.

“My advice for jobseekers is to try to get some experience in the field they want to go into, as this will show they have the skills needed to do that job. Volunteering is one of many ways that young people can increase their employability.”
