A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following an explosion and house fire in Brixton yesterday.

The blast, which happened in Abbots Park, near Tulse Hill, blew the roof of the terraced house clean off and left the road strewn with debris before flames engulfed the building.

Lambeth police confirmed that the man remains in custody this afternoon (Wednesday) as enquiries continue. Part of Abbots Park remains closed during the investigations.

Firefighters and police were called to the scene just after 11am.

Station manager Bruce Grain said yesterday: “It appears that there was also an explosion at the property. The whole of the roof was destroyed and all of the first floor windows were smashed including one which was blown across the street.

The Brigade called was called at 1105. Firefighters from Brixton, West Norwood and Clapham fire stations attended the incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
