A man was today convicted of shooting a man in South Beach bar, Brixton Hill, for protecting his female friends.

The victim, a 19-year-old university student, was shot in the stomach outside the club by Leslie Ammah, 23, of Copeland House, Lambeth Walk for coming to the defence of the women who were being hassled by Ammah and his friends.

Ammah and his friends fled to a waiting Audi TT car after the shooting, which happened in September 2011.The victim collapsed and was taken to Kings College Hospital, where he later recovered.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Paul Davis, from Trident, said: “The victim had enjoyed a night out and intervened in a situation simply because he was concerned for the safety of his friends.

“His act of kindness led to a situation that escalated and ended with him being shot in the stomach by Ammah, who was armed.

“I am pleased that extensive enquiries led to Ammah’s identification and he now faces a hefty prison sentence.”

Leslie Ammah was found guilty, at the Old Bailey, of GBH and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

He was acquitted of a charge of attempted murder, and will be sentenced on April 2.
