A man has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act after setting fire to his home on Corrance Road, Brixton, yesterday morning.

The man managed to escape the property, and was treated by the London Ambulance Service at the scene. The fire damaged part of his ground floor flat.

Sergeant Jack Rowlands, of Ferndale Safer Neighbourhoods Team, tweeted: “Swift decision making meant that he, the public and the police came to no harm. Very professionally dealt with. He is now being cared for.”

Fire engines from Brixton and West Norwood stations arrived at the scene, and had control of the blaze in under an hour.
