A new pizza restaurant, Mamma Dough, is coming to Brixton’s Coldharbour Lane.

It will be opening at the former site of the Angel pub, which closed in 2011 and was bought by property developer Lexadon in 2012, at the beginning of August.

The sourdough pizza place, which will seat around 55, will be the second Mamma Dough outpost, the original is in Honor Oak Park, SE23.

Owners William Moore and Jake Harrison told the Brixton Blog that they were drawn to Brixton because “there is no where like it.”

“Everytime I come here I’m struck by how vibrant it is,” said Harrison. “And I love this building, it has such character”

“I think Brixton fits with our values: we’re independent and creative,” said Moore. “We’re not polished. Big chains would have covered up the old style features in the building but we won’t – we want to preserve it.”

They say they try to source as much as they can locally and, like in Honor Oak Park, plan to become part of the community.

“Basically all of our staff in Honor Oak Park are local,” said Moore. “And we’ve sponsored just about every school raffle since we arrived, we’re keen to continue that kind of stuff here in Brixton.”

Mamma Dough will face competition from Brixton’s established pizza restaurants: Franco Manca is hugely popular with regular queues for a table and Agile Rabbit is a firm favourite with many.

Moore and Harrison say a key difference will be that they take bookings for tables, alongside walk-ins.

So will Mamma Dough find its place and Brixton? We’ll have to wait and see.
