OLYMPICS: Levi Roots speaks at Windrush Square as the torch comes to Brixton

Levi Roots addressed crowds at Windrush Square today who had gathered to celebrate the Olympic torch coming to Brixton.

He said: “we are here to see something very special today. We’ve seen many changes of Brixton, and this is the day that Brixton is reborn once again. We’ve been through many metamorphoses in Brixton, but today the light is here.”

Celebrity chef Levi Roots is compering the event and Steve Reed, council leader, has also spoken.

The torch will come from Camberwell, passing along Coldharbour Lane before stopping briefly in central Brixton and continuing on along Acre Lane towards Clapham.

Lambeth programme manager at the charity Chance UK, Caroline Hopkins, will carry the flag from 251 Coldharbour Lane to the junction with Barrington Road at 12.20pm today.

She told the Blog: “I was chosen for my work in the community.  I was nominated by a colleague and I thought, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to get it, but that’s lovely.’

“I’m really, really excited. We’re going to try to get some mentors and children down to line the route. It’s about the local community getting involved.”
