Open letter from market traders

A lot had been discussed recently in our community and in the press about Brixton’s indoor markets at Brixton Market Row & Brixton Village and the change they are going through. A number of traders have been communicating with one another, the press and our landlords, however we now feel that it is the correct time to formalise our body and so we are in the process of setting up a Community Interest Company (CIC). Our aims as a CIC will be to:

• Protect the economic interests of the indoor traders through providing economic stability

• Maintain the cultural balance & diversity of the market

• Maintain the market and its space as an integral part of the wider Brixton community

We thank everyone who has supported the markets in this new phase and helped to make it such a success.  Our priorities now are to continue to provide an independent and diverse local shopping and social hub for our community in the heart of Brixton.

We hope that this CIC will give us a united voice that will help to protect  the unique spirit of the market, create an open and productive dialogue with our landlords; InShops, and streamline all the support so regularly offered to the traders by our customers.

As a Community Interest Company, we have hired the Brixton Pound to act as a liaison for us, to help ensure that all businesses are represented equally. If you would like to let us know your thoughts about the direction the market should be moving in or would like to offer support of any kind then please email us at: bit@brixtonpound.org.

We will be updating those interested through our twitter feed @bitcic so please follow us.
