Plans to turn former nursing home into apartment block

barringtonA development company is applying for planning to turn the disused Barrington Lodge Nursing Home (right) into a block of roughly 100 new flats.

The building has been empty for about a decade, despite previous attempts to develop it into flats, but all that might change soon. A leaflet given out this month to residents in the area states: “Aragon Property Ventures is looking to bring forward the redevelopment of the former Barrington Lodge Nursing Home to provide approximately 100 new private and affordable homes.”

A consultation on the idea took place last weekend, led by Indigo Planning. A mix of private and ‘affordable’ housing is planned, but it is not yet clear what percentage of this will be ‘affordable’. The planning application will be submitted later this year and will then go through the usual process of public consultation and council decision-making.

The issue of ‘affordable’ housing – often set in Lambeth at 60% of the market rent – is a hot topic in Brixton, as poorer residents get pushed out by rising rents and the need for truly affordable flats gets greater. Last year, the council controversially approved a 20% rise in ‘affordable’ rents at the new Barratt Homes development on Coldharbour Lane.

If you are a local resident and want to share your views on the redevelopment, see details here.

  1. It’s appalling that this place has been empty for so long.

I hope that the empty block above Iceland is next to be turned into homes

    • Agree, what a waste, probably because of time wasting at the council planning department. More homes available increases supply and that will lead to lower prices – with a bit of luck.
