Police are appealing for information and witnesses after two recent robberies of women in Brixton.

In both cases the victims were walking alone in Stockwell Avenue, which runs parallel to Stockwell Road, when they were attacked from behind, assaulted and robbed.

At about 11.40pm on Thursday 31 August, a 23-year-old woman was walking home in Stockwell Avenue when she was attacked from behind by a man.

He punched the victim to the ground and continued to punch her while she was on the ground before running off with her purse and phone.

Around 11.50 a second victim, a 34-year-old woman, was also attacked from behind in Stockwell Avenue. She was pushed to the ground and, after a struggle, the robber made off on foot with her handbag.

The suspect for both robberies is described as a Black man in his early 20s, around 5ft 10ins tall and of athletic build. He was wearing a black jacket. One of the victims described the man as having black plaited hair that came halfway down his neck.

The first victim was taken to hospital and discharged the following day. The second victim did not require hospital treatment.

There has been no arrest and enquiries are continuing.

Anyone with information that might assist the police can call Lambeth CID via 101. To remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
