A group hopes that an event will increase interest in their project to create a skills sharing workshop in Loughborough Junction.

South London Makerspace (SLM) is holding a meet and make day tomorrow at London College of Communication.

As well as having the opportunity to meet the people behind it, attendees will also be able to use the space to work on their own creative projects and meet other like-minded folk.

One of the trustees, Tom Newsome, described it as an “open workshop where everyone can come and make the mess and noise, use tools and gain the knowledge that we just can’t do at home”

There are no limits to the type of projects that attendees can bring to the event.Past projects include a portable sound system using a motorbike battery and a suitcase.

Another member created a robotic crow that taps its feet as people approach it.

Skills sharing is at the heart of the group. Tom told the Blog: “creativity thrives when you have the space to collaborate”

Tom and the other members are currently in negotiations with Network Rail over the use of a railway arch in Loughborough Junction which will house a workshop for twelve months at a peppercorn rent.

Once open, members will be able to access the space 24 hours a day seven days per week to work on their projects.

“Membership costs what you think it’s worth. The average membership is about £15 per month. But if you can’t afford anything at all don’t worry,” said Tom.

Tomorrow’s event is being held from 11am until  4pm and there will be a discussion around progress towards opening a dedicated workshop at 1pm.

It’s free to attend, although donations to cover costs are welcome. Register for the event
