The weekend ahead in Brixton

These rather special Christmas wreaths, by Trimmings, are available at the Christmas market, in Station Road on Saturday

What’s cooler than being cool? The Electric apparently, where, playing fast and loose with the word ‘festival’ the Unhinged Festival will be setting up shop tonight. Hailing from hipster homeland Berlin, it’s a sehr gut combination of music, performing and visual arts featuring – among others – Ben Ottewell from indie-folk band Gomez, new band Lazarus and the Planecrash and beatboxer Shlomo, followed up with DJ sets from Ghostpoet and the guy who does the Buttoned Down Disco, at Camden’s Koko. Advance tickets appear to still be available here  for £12, or it’s £15 on the door. BYO skinny jeans.

Tomorrow (Saturday) will see Christmas poking its festive head up at the market in Station Road. Ambitiously described as “a Christmas medley of everything Brixton has to offer”, there will be a DIY people’s Christmas tree for punters to decorate, as well as live music from Tulse Hill three-piece The Bites, from 1.30pm outside Craft Beer Co. Ho Ho Ho. Why not see if you can do all of your Crimbo shopping in Brixton Pounds?

There’s still time to catch some of the films from the Underwire film festival  at the Ritzy, celebrating short films made by women who still under represented in the industry, despite being one of the better genders. Whether you like women, are one, or just know someone who might be one, why not check out live and filmed comedy event Live Wire, hosted by Cariad Lloyd tonight at 9.30, or Why Can’t Women Make Feature Films  tomorrow at 3.30. There’s more on Ashley Clark’s excellent film round up  or here.

Kaff Bar is fast becoming a much-loved Brixton favourite, and not just for the £3 mojito in a jam jar or owner Steve’s dashing good looks. Saturday nights are always buzzing with various musical shenanigans and this week it’s the turn of rockabilly DJs Whiskey Kittens. It’s their last gig there before they throw a full-skirted New Year’s Eve party, and they’ve warned that the odd Christmas songs might be involved. So Scrooges need not apply.
