Traders unite in the market

Business owners in the covered markets are forming a company to help defend themselves from crippling rent hikes.

Triggered by a series of hefty rises from landlords In Shops, traders in Market Row and Granville Arcade, Brixton, are setting up a Community Interest Company (CIC) to put up a united front against the hikes.

Last year a community campaign to save Nour Cash and Carry succeeded in making In Shops back down from a proposed 22 per cent rise in the store’s rent.

Saja Shaheen, from Nour, said: “By starting a CIC we can provide strength in numbers.

“Individual traders do not want to be victimised. A lot will not speak up for fear of further rent rises.”
