What’s On in Brixton: 4 – 10 July

    For the first time in over 350 years, two of Gerrit Dou’s (1613-1675) finest paintings Woman playing a Clavichord and Lady Playing a Virginal, both created in c.1665, will be displayed together at Dulwich Picture Gallery. Dou in Harmony (5 July – 6 November), the latest instalment in the Making Discoveries series, will highlight how the Dutch Master interpreted the same subject but with varying changes to its mood and meaning.     Breaking the Mould and Challenging Black Mathematical Stereotypes with Dr Nira Chamberlain. Dr Chamberlain is a chartered scientist, chartered mathematician, as well as a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), will be discussing his experience in this field as well as his recent donation to Black Cultural Archives. He has also been named by the Science Council of as one of Britain’s top 100 scientists. Free, priority booking to Friends of Black Cultural Archives. 6pm to 7.30pm.

    SAT 9 & SUN 10 @ JOSEPHINE AVE
    Urban Art 2016, is London’s largest annual open-air Contemporary Arts Fair and takes place along the railings of Josephine Avenue. Over 2,000 pieces of work will be on display from over 200 artists ranging from the novice to the established and with prices to match this is an event for all art lovers, whatever the budget. Free. 10.00am to 6.00pm.

    SUN 10 @ BROCKWELL PARK
    The Brockwell Park Dog Show is back and this year it’s honouring Brixton’s Diamond Dog David Bowie. The show runs from 2pm to 4pm – and is free to watch – with registration from 12pm to 1pm. There’s limited places, so its first come first served, and entry is £2 per category which range from handsomest dog, prettiest bitch, cutest puppy, golden oldie to best fancy dress. Organisers are also hoping to raise £500 to fix the fence but would love to raise enough to invest in a vinyl fence that won’t rot and can also be loaned out by Brockwell Park Community Partners – who support the show – for other events.     The South London Botanical Institute hosts a printing workshop: chance to learn printing techniques you can do at home from the designer of our new wallpaper. Based on designs from our herbarium plant specimens. £12 SLBI members/£15 non-members. 10am to 1pm. Online tickets here.
