An 11-year-old girl died yesterday after being struck by a lorry on Streatham Place, Streatham Hill.

Hani Haji Hassan was involved in the collision at about 3.20pm on the south circular road, shortly after stepping off her bus from school.

The girl, who was from Streatham, was taken to Kings College Hospital with severe head injuries, but died later with her parents at her side.

Her father Aweis Haji, 43, told the Standard: “No parents should have to take the decision we had to and turn off the life support it is the worst experience to see your daughter like that.

“We as a family are devastated. Hani was very clever and wanted to be a doctor. She studied very hard and had every chance of making her dream come true.”

Hani was the oldest of six daughters.

Mr Haji added: “She was the oldest and so helped to look after all the others. She was a fantastic sister and daughter. We cannot believe she has gone.

“She also had lots of friends and could not have been a better person.”

Following the news of the  collision, Streatham MP Chuka Umunna  said: “I was deeply saddened to learn of the heart breaking tragedy that happened in the heart of our community in Streatham Hill yesterday afternoon.

“My thoughts, and the thoughts of everyone living locally, are with the family of this young girl at this very difficult time.”

The driver of the lorry stopped at the scene but was not arrested.
