Brixton Pub Review – The Effra Social

The Space

Original décor and furnishings are vintage and quirky, yet homely and unpretentious. Its days as the home of the local Conservative Club seem like yesterday. There’s also a beautiful dining area tucked away out the back.

The Punters

An eclectic mix. On the weekend it is packed to overflowing with young professionals out to celebrate weekend freedom. Yet in the chilled out weekday evenings there is more chance to go local character spotting.

The Booze

A great draught selection. Kraft beer is also available and the wine list is well composed. It’s just a shame they don’t do cocktails.

The Grub

The food menu offers traditional British food with a continental twist. Starters include hummus and pitta bread and baked camembert followed by mains of steak sandwiches, burgers, risotto followed by brownies or cheeseboards. Perfect comfort food.

The Damage

Totally reasonable. A quality three course meal can easily be bought for around £20. The drinks are also reasonable. You feel like you’re getting value for money.

An Interesting Fact

The pub is supposedly haunted…I don’t want to start any rumours but I swear the portrait of Winston Churchill that takes pride of place in the Front Room winked at me…

What’s a bit rubbish?

Its popularity on the weekend means the pub has to operate a one-in-one-out policy from around 10pm.

What else thy got in the bag?

The Effra Social has a diary packed with events. A monthly reggae night (every last Sunday of the month), weekly jazz evenings, a weekly quiz (Tuesdays), and a live band every Friday. Plus, keep an eye out for plays and comedy nights.

To sum it up…

A suitably eccentric tardis of a pub.
