Applications have opened for young sports players in Lambeth to apply for up to £1,250 in funding.

Lambeth Gifted and Talent Programme and the GLL Sport Foundation have teamed up to offer support to local athletes in 2015.

Sports players have until February 20 to apply for the financial and training awards.

In 2014, 51 young sports players in Lambeth received £30,500 worth of support through the scheme. Those who benefited included Brixton fencer Paul Sanchez-Lethem, who was able to compete in the World and European Championships last year, and 18-year-old Jules Dang-Akodo, who is part of the England Under-20 basketball team. Dang-Akodo said the award gave him great support for his “on-going development as a basketball player, as I aspire to reach the senior squad”.

The successful applicants will benefit from financial support for travel, competition and equipment costs for a year. They also benefit from performance support and free sporting access to more than 140 sport and leisure venues managed by GLL across the UK.
