Brixton Barnardo’s brings the bass, brass and bebop

The Barnardo’s shop in Brixton has become the first in the UK to specialise in music following a makeover that has caught the attention of record collectors and musicians.

The store on Brixton Road now has an eclectic collection of vinyl LPs arranged in alphabetical order, alongside music-themed books and DVDs, band t-shirts and other memorabilia.Donations of musical instruments from as far away as Scotland are also finding their way on to the racks, including electric guitars, acoustic guitars and drums, which are carefully refurbished in store before being put on sale.

Barnardo’s hopes the new format will satisfy the strong local demand for music and tap into Brixton’s rich musical heritage, helping to raise more funds to support its work with the most vulnerable children, young people and families. It’s hoped that gigs could be held in store this summer to mark Barnardo’s 150th anniversary year.

Manager Russell Lewendon told the Brixton Blog:

It’s great to know that as well as bringing new listening pleasure to music fans, the sale of our records raises funds that will directly support Barnardo’s work with the most vulnerable children, families and young people in London and beyond.

If you haven’t yet been to our store in Brixton, please come in and have a look around. The stock changes all the time, so there’s always good chance you’ll walk away with a bargain while contributing to a really important cause.

Standard LPs sell for £1.99, but rare and highly prized records can fetch between £10 and £75 if they’re in good condition and appeal to collectors.
