The launch of Pop Farm on Sunday 20 March will bring a new community garden and growing centre to the heart of Brixton.
After two weeks of construction and planting, led by volunteers, the farm opens at Pop Brixton where visitors can learn how we can all grow more in London.
Visitors can help sow seeds and plant seedlings into the brand new flowerbeds, and create beautiful plant pots to take home for free. The event at Pop Brixton, 49 Brixton Station Road, starts at 11am and finishes at 3pm.
The Pop Farm project is a collaboration between Pop Brixton and social enterprise Urban Growth Learning Gardens, and will transform a section of the Pop Brixton site into a lush community garden. The aim is to make gardening more accessible for local people and share food-growing knowledge in the community.
Bruno Lacey, Director of Urban Growth, said “We’re excited to see Pop Farm open to the public, it is an innovative food growing project where we hope to improve health and wellbeing, educate and bring people together.”
The two main aspects of the project will be farming and education. It will be used to grow decorative plants, fresh herbs and other ingredients for use by local people, food businesses and Pop Brixton’s community of caterers; as well as offering training, including formal qualification programmes, fun gardening workshops for local schools and free weekend activities for the public to take part in.
