‘Great Women of Brixton’ was launched this week to celebrate International Women’s day by Brixton live partners Photofusion and 198.

The project, led by Leah Wittingham, pitched up in HustleBucks in Brixton Market on Sunday and filmed members of the public making nominations for the great women in their life and past.

Members of the public made nominations for people that had changed their lives or shaped their community in some way. Mymumboy

Some nominated their mum whilst others commemorated historical legends like Claudia Jones who, in 1958, founded Brixton’s, and Briton’s, first major black newspaper, The West Indian Gazette.

If you search in the ‘women’ section of Lambeth’s archives, it is completely empty. Lizzy King, from Photofusion, said, “Brixton’s history is filled with great and inspiring women, but the Lambeth archives are completely empty of any record of them.”

Leah Wittingham explained that the project will continue to collect together stories of the women who have made and continue to make great contributions to Brixton’s community and history.

‘Great Women of Brixton’ will put women back into the Lambeth archives.
