Brixton bridges get new messages

Work has started to put the new design on the railway bridge across Brixton Road that once carried the much-misunderstood B OUR GUEST message.

Night-time work began last night on the complex design that will eventually read “come in love” on the north side of the bridge and “stay in peace” on the south.

Said to be inspired by, among other things, the bright coloured string vests on sale from Brixton market stalls, the concept is by architect Farouk Agoro and designer Akil Scafe-Smith.

Brixton Design Trail organised the competition for the design with Lambeth council.

Another, less welcoming, bridge-borne message also greets visitors to Brixton at the moment. Graffiti on the second railway bridge crossing the Brixton Road points “colonialist” yuppies towards Clapham.
