Brixton Chamber Orchestra will perform music premiered in Paris from three different eras which reflect elements of its musical culture on the 16th February at St Michael’s Church, Stockwell.

Paris is known as a city of culture, sophistication, refinement and beauty, yet also as one of bawdy behaviour and civil unrest.

Suites of dances and airs from Rameau’s opera-ballet Les Indes Galantes characterise musical sound worlds from the west and east ‘Indies’ as experienced from the perspective of his position in the French royal court.

Paris’ grand musical culture can clearly be seen reflected in Mozart’s Symphony No. 31, premiered at the Concert Spirituel by the largest orchestra he had yet had access to during his unsuccessful attempt to find a job there aged twenty-two.

Saint-Saens was one of the key composers to develop a ‘French’ sound toward the end of the nineteenth century. His La Muse et le Poete was premiered in 1910, with Paris by then the uncontested epicentre of the new musical modernism.
